Test Policies for International Students

All students are required to submit ACT and/or SAT scores, as well as a TOEFL, with their application for admission, unless they qualify for one of the waivers below. We have no preference between the ACT and SAT. Please note that score submissions must come from your guidance office or testing agency.

ACT (Code: 3260)

  • Best score is determined by combining the highest score received on each section from any combination of testing dates (i.e., superscoring).

SAT (Code: 1134)

  • Best score is determined by combining the highest score received on each section from any combination of testing dates (i.e., superscoring).
  • We will continue to accept scores from the old version of the SAT for the five years scores remain valid, and will superscore within both the old exam and the new, but will not superscore between the two versions. No matter what scores you send, we’ll be considering your best.
  • The SAT Essay is neither required nor recommended as part of your application credentials.

SAT/ACT Waivers

  • The College of Wooster will waive the SAT requirement for international students who attend an English-medium high school and have fulfilled one of the following requirements:
    - Will graduate with an IB diploma (please submit predicted scores)
    - Will complete at least three A level exams (please submit predicted scores)
    - Has completed at least 3 AP exams (please submit official scores)
  • Students qualifying for an SAT waiver must still take the TOEFL, unless a TOEFL exemption applies (as below).
  • Students requesting this waiver must email Reon Sines-Sheaff confirming which requirement they will be fulfilling. Email should be titled “SAT Waiver Request” and should be received after the student has submitted their application.

TOEFL Waivers (Code: 1134)

  • TOEFL waivers will be automatically granted for students who meet one of the following criteria:
    - Achieve a score of at least 570 on the Evidence Based Reading and Writing section of the SAT OR a 24 on the Reading section of the ACT.
    - Have studied for at least three years in the U.S.
    - Have attended at least three years of high school in one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ghana, India, Jamaica, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
  • IELTS or other approved English exams may be submitted in lieu of TOEFL.
  • Students who receive a TOEFL score (or equivalent) below 90 will be strongly encouraged to attend the English Engagement Seminar at The College of Wooster. Students with TOEFL scores above 90 are able to join the seminar on a space-available basis.
