WOOSTER, Ohio - Nancy Fraser, the Henry A. and Louise Loeb Professor of Political and Social Science and Department Chair at New School University, will present "Who Counts as a Subject of Justice? National Citizenry, Global Humanity, or Transnational Community of Risk?" at the third annual Lindner Lecture in Ethics on Thursday, Nov. 12, at The College of Wooster. The free public lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.). A dessert reception will precede the lecture. On Friday, Nov. 13, also in Lean Lecture Room of
Wishart Hall, Professor Fraser will participate in a session of "Author meets Critics" with Kevin Olson, associate professor of political science at the University of California at Irvine, and Chris Zurn, associate professor of philosophy at the University of Kentucky, serving as "critics".
This session will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Fraser's research concentrations focus on social and political theory, feminist theory, and contemporary French and German thought. Her publications include Scales of Justice: Reimagining Political Space in a Globalizing World; Unruly Practices: Power, Discourse and Gender in Contemporary Social Theory; and Justice Interruptus: Critical Reflections on the "Postsocialist" Condition, among others. She received her A.B. in philosophy from Bryn Mawr College and her M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy from City University of New York.
Olson is a political theorist who has written on issues such as popular sovereignty, citizenship, the cultural and material bases of democracy, the welfare state, governmentality, and democratic justice. He is author of Reflexive Democracy: Political Equality and the Welfare State, and editor of Adding Insult to Injury: Nancy Fraser Debates Her Critics. His work has also been published in the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, Constellations, and the Journal of Political Philosophy. Olson received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Northwestern University.
Zurn specializes in social and political philosophy, the philosophy of law, and contemporary European philosophy. His work focuses on deliberative democratic theories of constitutional democracy, and issues in contemporary critical social theory. He is the author of Deliberative Democracy and the Institutions of Judicial Review, and has been published in numerous journals. He earned his B.A. in philosophy from Wesleyan University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy from Northwestern University.
