Helping Each Other in Grief
Our community is mourning the loss of another member. We keep in mind the families and friends who are managing the unimaginable grief. Among us are recognitions of those we have lost and the undue and premature ending of potential and possibilities.
Grief is not a problem that has a solution. It is a human experience. It is an event, a process, which is unique and complex. Grief does not exist on a time table, with a specific start and stop date. It often ebbs and flows, giving us moments of more and less intensity of difficult thoughts and feelings. Grief is an opportunity to connect with each other, to help one another, and to heal.
We may need to spend more time with friends, family and those most important to us. Our tasks and responsibilities may be set aside, temporarily, to be aware and to care. We may find the feelings and thoughts we experience are more distressing and overwhelming than we’ve had previously, and therefore we may need additional support.
Our reactions may include: anger, guilt, regret, sadness, fear, numbness, feeling overwhelmed, withdrawing from those around us, yearning, shock, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, nightmares, changes in appetite, increased use of substances, thoughts of self-harm, ambivalence, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and low energy or motivation.
We have resources available to us. Reach out to connect or help a friend get connected. Take care of yourself. Counselors are available at the Wellness Center. Call 330-263-2319 during office hours (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.) to set up a time to talk.
