A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, is an encrypted tunnel from a computer, through the internet, to the intranet on campus. The use of a VPN connection is to allow access to on campus resources and services securely while traveling or at home.

Users connected through the VPN will be able to use all campus and library resources as if they were on campus. VPN provides several of these restricted access services with proof that you are a part of the Wooster community.

VPN is intended to provide access to on campus resources from off campus. To that end, users cannot access VPN from on campus. In addition, you should disconnect from VPN as soon as you have finished accessing the information you need.

Documentation:

Server space is available to all members of the campus community through Novell. This space is accessible through the use of a Novell client, or through Native File Access (NFA). Each student at the College is allocated 100 megabytes of server space, which is accessible from any computer on campus. This space is intended for students to back-up important academic content and to store frequently used files.

Faculty and staff members are allocated 5 gigabytes of server space to store and back-up important files. Computers allocated to College employees that have Windows XP are configured to login to Novell when logging into the computer itself.

All Macintosh users on campus connect to the Novell resources through NFA. Windows users have the choice of connecting to Novell by downloading the Novell client, found on our technology software downloads page, or through NFA.

Click here for instructions on how to connect to NFA

The College of Wooster has contracted with MT Business Technologies, Inc. to provide Ricoh multi-function devices that provide both high-speed copying and laser-quality printing at a significantly lower cost per page than laser printers on campus.

Wooster also uses a print management solution from Pharos Systems. Students may install the Pharos popup on their personal computer and print to any of the public print queues.

Copiers and printers are maintained through User Services. If you have a problem, contact the department at x1111 between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm.

Documentation:

Network Access Control, or NAC, is a mechanism that was put in place to make sure that all users on the College's network are affiliated with the College, and are allowed access to services. It also sets minimum standards for virus protection, and operating system patch level.

Registering with the NAC is a process that involves user authentication and downloading the Clean Access Agent, a component of the Cisco Clean Access Suite.

After plugging a computer into the network, users will be directed to an authentication page and prompted to enter their Wooster username and password, which are the same as their Wooster email account. After successful authentication, users will be prompted to download the Clean Access Agent. This software helps to protect the computer by searching for vulnerabilities. Running the Clean Access Agent and logging into the network will allow students to have full network privileges.

Gaming consoles, IP phones, and computers running Linux will also need to be registered on the campus network. Users must submit the type of device and the MAC address (example: 00-1A-B2-34-56-CD) to it-nac@wooster.edu. Devices will be added within two business days of receiving the appropriate information.

Location: Morgan Hall

Telephone Coordinator: Natalie McCoy-Koss, ext. 2393

Telephone Service: Each Wooster student receives a Permanent Personal Extension (PPX) in the summer before their first year. That four-digit extension will remain with the student no matter where he or she lives on the campus through out their academic career as a current student. The PPX may be dialed direct from one campus extension to another. Off-campus callers dial 330-287-3000 and either enter the student's PPX or follow instructions to dial by name. Every PPX includes voice mail at no extra charge so answering machines are not necessary. Each residential room will have a telephone jack, students are to provide the telephone unit. Local phone service is free and long distance calls can be made via a calling card or cellular phone.

Cable TV Service: Each residential room is equipped with one cable jack which includes a cable package of approximately 66 free cable channels. Students are to provide the TV and the cable to connect to the cable jack.
