Guidance for General Workplace Areas

Signage Program

The College has developed a portfolio of signage and decals to guide building occupants and visitors as they enter, travel through, occupy, and exit buildings. Common areas in buildings such as main entry doors, corridors, lobbies, waiting areas, will be populated with signage with reminders of social distancing, safe hygiene practices and other important information.

Areas will soon be able to request, download, print, and post signs and graphics from the portfolio to add to their department’s work areas.

Entering and Exiting Buildings and Workspaces

One strategy for reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission is controlling the overlap of people entering and/or exiting a building or workspace at one time. To accomplish this, entrance-only and exit-only areas have been designated for all buildings on campus. All building occupants are expected to follow the signage posted whether it applies to entrances, exits, elevator usage, or stair access. Deviations from posted signage are permitted only in the event of an emergency.

Circulating Through Buildings

Building occupants navigating through building corridors and hallways should follow the right side of these passageways and should avoid congregating.

Using Restrooms

When using a restroom try to ensure at least 6 feet of distance between individuals or if possible, wait until the restroom is otherwise empty. Wash your hands thoroughly afterward to reduce the potential transmission of the virus. Only use alternating sinks when washing hands in a restroom; only use alternating urinals in men's restrooms.

Using Elevators and Stairs

Follow posted guidelines. Use stairs when possible. If you are using an elevator, wear your mask or face covering and avoid touching the elevator buttons with your exposed hand/fingers, if possible. Facing the wall of the elevator if another individual is in the elevator is also recommended. Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer upon departing the elevator. Limit occupancy to the number on the posted signage. Floor decals will be placed to suggest where occupants should stand. Those waiting for elevators in lobbies should practice appropriate physical distancing.

Cleaning of Shared and Personal Spaces and Equipment

Shared spaces and public spaces will be subject to enhanced cleaning schedules and protocols so custodial crews will be spending additional effort cleaning in those spaces. Consequently, single- occupancy offices will be visited less frequently. Individuals may request supplies for cleaning/disinfecting their workspace more frequently, and offices will be provided with additional supplies to enable employees to regularly wipe down commonly used and shared surfaces or equipment. Limit or avoid where possible, the sharing of work materials.

Departments are expected to take steps to ensure compliance with guidelines and protocols, e.g., remove or rearrange chairs and tables and add visual markers in meeting rooms, employee break rooms and other common spaces to ensure physical distancing. Departments are also expected to wipe all high-touch surfaces, including tables, refrigerator handles, coffee machines, etc. daily.

To minimize frequently touched surfaces, building managers should review the interior doors within their department’s work areas to determine if any can be left open when the area is occupied. Fire-rated doors, typically those that are equipped with closers and open to a building’s corridor, should always be kept closed.


Convening in groups increases the risk of viral transmission. With the exception of classroom instruction, where interaction between faculty and students is an integral part of the learning experience, convening groups is not recommended. Where feasible, meetings -- even among those on campus -- should be held in whole or part using the extensive range of available collaboration tools (Google Meet, Teams, Zoom, telephone, etc.). During employees’ time on site, face-to-face meetings and conversations should be held judiciously and employees are encouraged and should be supported in communicating by technological means.

Please follow posted guidelines if possible or observe social distancing. Individuals should still be able to maintain 6 feet of separation for social distancing. Departments should consider rearranging tables and chairs and/or adding visual cue marks or signage in meeting rooms to support social distancing practices between attendees.

Reception Desks and Transaction Counters

As the College enters the next phases of reopening, reception areas inside office suites should be equipped with signage requesting visitors to remain six feet away. In places where this distance cannot be achieved, the addition of a temporary plastic shield is recommended. Requests for an assessment in these situations can be submitted via the work order process through Facilities.

Transaction counters, especially at campus retail locations, will be fitted with temporary plastic shields or other furniture placed in such a way as to ensure at least six feet is between employees and guests.

Campus Dining and Meals

Before and after eating, you should wash your hands thoroughly to reduce the potential transmission of COVID-19. If dining on campus, you should wear your mask or face covering until you are ready to eat and then put it back on afterward. Dining facilities on campus, once open, will be configured according to social distancing and other safety precautions. Individuals should not sit facing one another. Staff are encouraged to take food back to their office area or eat outside, if this is reasonable for your situation. If you are eating in your work environment, maintain 6 feet distance between you and others where possible. Individuals should not sit facing one another. Only remove your mask or face covering in order to eat, then put it back on. Departments should remove or rearrange chairs and tables or add visual cue marks in break rooms or shared spaces to support social distancing practices. Wipe all surfaces, including table, refrigerator handle, etc., after using common areas.

College Travel or Personal Travel

The College will continue to limit College-funded travel through December 31, 2020. Only travel that is essential will be permitted, and conference travel, in general, will not be approved. ALL travel must be approved IN ADVANCE by the area’s vice president, provost, or chief officer. Individual travel by students, staff or faculty that is essential and is not replaceable by remove work (for example, travel to do field work or essential academic or college business that cannot be done remotely) will be considered and may be approved. Guests on Campus

In order to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19 illness on campus, only those campus events that are essential to the mission of the College will be permitted; those campus events must be approved IN ADVANCE by the area’s vice president, provost, or chief officer. The College will not host any campus events to which external audiences will be invited nor will the College hold any campus events that exceed the current local, state, or federal mandates for public gatherings. Any event held on campus will require attendees to wear a mask, maintain social distancing guidelines, and comply with occupancy maximums for the respective space.
