Summary:

The General Maintenance Carpenter provides excellent customer service to the campus community by performing skilled carpentry work. The role involves constructing, repairing, and maintaining woodwork, equipment, furniture, and various structures across the campus.

 

Essential Departmental Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Constructs, installs, and renovates wood and metal structures, including walls, doors, windows, stair treads, risers, handrails and cabinets.
  • Repairs and/or restores damaged furniture (dressers, closet doors, college owned student room furniture, etc.).
  • Hangs and finishes drywall.
  • Installs windows and doors, both custom jamb and pre-hung.
  • Moves equipment, furnishings and supplies around campus to meet the needs of faculty and staff.
  • Paints equipment and structures (both interior and exterior).
  • Assists with seasonal campus work including general preparation for special College events.
  • Cleans drains and roofs, performs minor roof repairs, including leaks.
  • Performs exterior siding and trim work, using wood, vinyl or aluminum.
  • Performs general equipment preventative maintenance as assigned.
  • Assists with the installation of new/replacement equipment and accessory items in campus buildings.
  • Serves as part of the Facilities and Operations department on call rotation.
  • Serves as part of the college’s essential employee team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Education and/or Experience:

  • Certificate from technical school in one or more building trades and/or 5 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalent.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Skills: 

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, building codes, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to speak effectively to staff, students and outside contractors.
  • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully; develops alternative solutions; works well in a group or individually.
  • Manages difficult or emotional customer situations; responds promptly to customer needs.
  • Good attention to detail.

Knowledge: 

  • Ability to apply concepts of basic mathematics and geometry as used in construction.

Abilities:

  • Acknowledge and comply with all departmental SOP, safety, and college requirements.
  • Strong professional ethics and discretion with an attitude of respect for all employed at CoW.

Work Environment:

  • Noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.

 

Physical Demands: 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to feel and hold objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit.
  • The individual must regularly lift and/or move 10-50 pounds.
