Celebrations

At the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, we celebrate and acknowledge, with events, scholarships, and prizes, the vibrant communities that combine to make Wooster special! Below are just a few of our recognized celebrations, other celebrations hosted by members of the CDI include religious holidays and heritage months.

January

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Classes are canceled for the day, and the community comes together to work on service projects and to engage in meaningful discussion and dialogue about race, civil rights and social justice, activism, and responsibility. Students are expected to participate fully as we make this into a “day on, not a day off.”

February

In coordination with various other offices and student organizations, the CDI proudly celebrates Black History Month through programming, social media campaigns, and lifting the Black voices on campus.

March

The CDI celebrates Women’s History Month and recognizes the accomplishments of folks who have identified as women throughout history. Join us in wearing purple on International Women’s Day 2022 – March 8th.

April

Though Pride Month is celebrated nationally in June, the College of Wooster and the CDI celebrate this important month during April so that our students can be a part of the celebration. With efforts lead by Sexuality and Gender Inclusion, join the CDI in April for these programs.

May

Lavender Graduation

Lavender Graduation is an inspiring and affirming ceremony that honors our graduating lesbian, gay, bi, trans, and queer (LGBTQ+) students for their strength and persistence in the face of adversity, as well as their achievements and contributions to the college. Participating students will receive a certificate, a lavender stole, and can choose to honor someone who has assisted during their college career.

Multicultural Stoling Ceremony

(Part of the Graduation festivities)
This ceremony pays tribute to the family, friends, and others who have helped graduating international students and US students of color achieve academically during their time at Wooster.  Each graduate who elects to participate selects an individual who has played a instrumental tole in his or her tenure at the College to present the stole, which is then worn at the graduation ceremony the following day.

November

IEW celebrates the benefits of international education and to recognizes the global exchange environment between the United States and other countries. We are proud to say that IEW has been celebrated at the College of Wooster for around 40 years, as the first festival was initiated in the 1970s.
