Program Overview

Why study Communication Studies?

Communication shapes every part of our lives, from personal relationships and public conversations to business, politics, healthcare, media, and social change. At The College of Wooster, Communication Studies students learn how communication works while developing the skills to become more effective writers, speakers, researchers, collaborators, and leaders.

Our flexible curriculum allows students to explore four interconnected areas of study:

  • Rhetoric and Politics
  • Communication and Culture
  • Relational Communication
  • Media Studies

Along the way, students strengthen the analytical, research, public speaking, and problem-solving skills that employers consistently value. They also learn how communication influences identity, organizations, civic life, public policy, and the media.

Every Communication Studies major completes a faculty-mentored Independent Study, pursuing an original research or creative project that reflects their own interests and career aspirations.

Academic Opportunities

161

Explore communication from multiple perspectives.

Communication Studies majors complete a flexible program that builds a strong foundation in communication theory while allowing students to tailor the major to their own interests.

Students explore communication through rhetoric, media, relationships, culture, politics, and public discourse while selecting electives that connect Communication Studies with disciplines such as Africana Studies, English, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies.

Every major completes a two-semester Independent Study, working one-on-one with a faculty mentor to investigate a communication question or create an original project. Independent Study projects may include traditional research, rhetorical criticism, interviews, media analysis, documentaries, podcasts, communication campaigns, or other applied communication work. The experience develops the independent research, writing, critical thinking, and communication skills that are hallmarks of a Wooster education.

Students interested in complementing another field of study may also pursue a Communication Studies Minor, a five-course program that introduces the core concepts of rhetoric, media, and human communication while providing a valuable interdisciplinary complement to majors across the liberal arts.
