Program Overview

Why study Environmental Geoscience?

From climate change and water resources to natural hazards and ecosystem health, many of today's environmental challenges begin with understanding how Earth works.

Environmental Geoscience at The College of Wooster combines earth science, environmental science, and interdisciplinary research to help students understand the physical environment and its relationship with human societies. Through field experiences, laboratory research, and close faculty mentorship, students investigate the processes shaping our planet while developing practical solutions to environmental problems.

The Earth becomes your classroom. Students begin research as early as their first year, participate in field experiences near campus and across the country, and complete an original Independent Study project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Many also participate in summer research and internships with universities, museums, government agencies, and environmental organizations across the United States and around the world.

Environmental Geoscience majors complete a strong scientific foundation before pursuing advanced coursework that emphasizes Earth surface processes, environmental systems, and interdisciplinary approaches to solving environmental problems.

Many students conduct research at locations throughout the United States—including Alaska, California, Oregon, Utah, and Washington—as well as internationally in places such as Iceland, Belize, Mongolia, Cyprus, and the Bahamas. Others collaborate with researchers at institutions including The Ohio State University, UNC Chapel Hill, UMass Amherst, and the American Museum of Natural History.

Students interested in complementing another major may also pursue the Earth Sciences Minor, a six-course program introducing both geology and environmental geoscience.
