Why study Mathematics at Wooster?
Small classes, close faculty mentorship, and a flexible liberal arts curriculum give mathematics students the opportunity to explore a wide range of interests while building deep quantitative expertise.
Students regularly participate in Sophomore Research, DataFest competitions, summer internships, and AMRE Consulting, where selected students spend eight weeks working as paid consultants on projects for Fortune 500 companies and nonprofit organizations. Working in small teams under faculty mentorship, students take ownership of real projects while gaining professional experience long before graduation.
The Mathematics Department is also home to a collaborative student community centered on the top floor of Taylor Hall, where students study together, meet with professors, and prepare for research and careers.

Every mathematics major completes a yearlong Independent Study project.
Working one-on-one with a faculty mentor, you'll investigate a topic that reflects your own interests and strengths. Projects may be theoretical, applied, data-driven, or connected to areas such as epidemiology, finance, sports analytics, or the natural sciences.
Many students also expand their experiences through AMRE Consulting, summer undergraduate research programs at major universities, or the internationally recognized Budapest Semesters in Mathematics program, where students spend a semester studying advanced mathematics alongside peers from around the world.
