Program Overview

What is the Pre-Engineering program?

The College of Wooster's Pre-Engineering Program combines the broad foundation of a liberal arts education with a direct pathway to professional engineering study through dual-degree partnerships with Case Western Reserve University and Washington University in St. Louis.

Students spend their first three years at Wooster, where they complete foundational coursework in mathematics, science, and their chosen major while developing the analytical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills that distinguish liberal arts graduates. After successfully completing the required coursework, students transfer to one of Wooster's partner engineering schools to complete their engineering degree and graduate with degrees from both institutions.

Prepare for engineering study.

Students complete three years at Wooster before continuing their engineering education through one of two cooperative programs.

During their time at Wooster, students complete foundational coursework in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer programming, and other disciplines appropriate to their intended engineering field while pursuing a liberal arts major.

Program Requirements

Planning Your Path

Students pursuing Pre-Engineering declare a major at Wooster, such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, or another appropriate discipline, and work closely with both their departmental advisor and the pre-engineering advisor throughout their undergraduate career.

To participate in the cooperative engineering program, students generally must:

  • Complete all Wooster General Education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree.
  • Complete approximately three-fourths of the coursework required for their major, including Junior Independent Study.
  • Successfully complete at least 24 courses, including a minimum of 16 courses at Wooster.
  • Apply for the senior year in absentia during the fall of the junior year.
  • Complete the first year at the partner engineering institution before the Bachelor of Arts degree is awarded by Wooster.
  • Transfer engineering coursework with grades of C or higher to complete the Wooster degree requirements.
Case Western Reserve University (3-2)

Students spend three years at Wooster followed by two years at Case Western Reserve University, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Wooster and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Case Western Reserve University.

Available engineering disciplines include:

Students complete foundational coursework in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer programming, and related sciences before transferring.

Washington University in St. Louis (3-3)

Students spend three years at Wooster followed by three years at Washington University in St. Louis, earning:

  • Bachelor of Arts from Wooster
  • Bachelor of Science from Washington University
  • Master of Science from Washington University

Bachelor's degree options include:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Systems Science & Engineering

Students may then continue into one of more than 17 master's degree programs, including:

  • Minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA
