What is the Pre-Forestry and Environmental Management program?

The College of Wooster's Pre-Forestry and Environmental Management Program combines personalized pre-professional advising with a dual-degree partnership that allows qualified students to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Wooster and a professional master's degree from Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment.

Students receive the broad perspective of a liberal arts education while building the scientific knowledge, analytical skills, and environmental understanding needed to address today's most pressing environmental challenges. On our celebrated Tree Campus USA, Wooster students learn in an environment that is also the ArbNet-accredited Abbey Arboretum, a living landscape that complements the study of forestry, ecology, and environmental stewardship.

Qualified students may participate in Wooster's 3-2 cooperative program with the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. Students complete three years at Wooster before continuing to Duke to pursue either a Master of Forestry (M.F.) or Master of Environmental Management (M.E.M.).

Program Requirements

Students interested in the 3-2 cooperative program complete three years at The College of Wooster before continuing their education at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment.

To participate in the program, students must:

Complete at least 24 semester courses, including a minimum of 16 courses at Wooster.
Complete all requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree except those fulfilled through the approved combined program, including completion of the major and Independent Study as outlined by the College.
Plan the major carefully so remaining requirements can be completed without a course overload if needed.
Students enrolled in combined professional programs may declare only one major.
Apply in writing to the Dean for Curriculum and Academic Engagement by the end of the second semester of the sophomore year and receive a recommendation from the major department.
Complete the senior year in absentia while beginning graduate study at Duke University.
Receive the Bachelor of Arts degree from Wooster after completing the required portion of the graduate program at Duke University.
Wooster does not provide financial aid during the senior year in absentia.
