Art History

What can you do with an Art History degree?

Art History explores how people have expressed ideas, beliefs, and identities through art across cultures and throughout history. You'll examine paintings, sculpture, architecture, prints, and other visual works while asking how they were created, displayed, interpreted, and preserved.

At Wooster, learning happens well beyond the classroom. You'll study works of art firsthand through the College's art collection, regular visits to the Cleveland Museum of Art, and close collaboration with faculty, the College of Wooster Art Museum, and Special Collections. Along the way, you'll strengthen your research, writing, and visual analysis skills while preparing for careers in museums, conservation, law, public history, education, and many other fields.

Learn through research, collections, and exhibitions.

Art History students work closely with faculty mentors, the College of Wooster Art Museum, and Special Collections on projects that bring classroom learning to life.

Courses such as History of Prints and Exhibiting Africa give students the opportunity to research rare objects and help organize exhibitions. Other students combine art history with chemistry through pigment analysis and conservation research, while some use digital tools such as ArcGIS and virtual archives to create public-facing projects on art and architectural history.

Students also receive Copeland Funding to support Independent Study research at museums and cultural institutions across the United States and abroad.
