Types of Aid

Grants

Grants can lower your cost without becoming a bill later. File the FAFSA to be considered each year for need-based aid from Wooster, federal programs, and participating state programs.

  • Need-based grants do not have to be repaid.

  • Wooster grant aid may be included in your financial aid package if you demonstrate need.

  • Federal and state grants may also apply, starting with the FAFSA.

  • Students reapply for need-based grants each year.

Loans

Loans can be one part of a larger financial aid plan. Wooster helps families understand the options available through federal and private loan programs.

  • Direct Subsidized Loans are need-based and do not accrue interest while you are enrolled at least half-time.

  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans may be available regardless of demonstrated financial need.

  • Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loans and private educational loans may help families cover remaining costs.

  • The Financial Aid Office can help you compare options before borrowing.

Work-Study

Student employment can help you earn money, gain experience, and build a schedule that works around your classes.

  • Federal Work-Study may be included for students who demonstrate financial need.

  • Campus jobs are designed to fit alongside academic commitments.

  • Students build practical skills while earning money during the school year.

  • Work-study is earned through employment, so it is paid over time rather than applied upfront.

External Scholarships & Tuition Benefits

Outside funding can add another layer to your Wooster financial plan, from community scholarships to tuition exchange programs for eligible families.

  • Outside scholarships come from organizations beyond Wooster, federal, or state programs.

  • Report outside scholarships to the Financial Aid Office so they can be applied as favorably as possible.

  • Scholarship search sites and high school counselors can be good starting points.

  • Eligible families may qualify through Tuition Exchange or GLCA tuition benefit programs.

  • Some external tuition benefits are renewable for up to eight semesters.
