Douglass Hall renovations named Outstanding Project in Learning by Design magazine

The College of Wooster’s recent renovation of Douglass Hall was named a 2026 Outstanding Project in Learning by Design, a leading publication focused on educational architecture and design. First built in 1929, Douglass’s 2025 renovation included restored spaces like the historic, natural woodwork in the first-floor lounge, full accessibility with a new elevator, and suite-style living spaces increasing its capacity.

Showcasing the best of educational design from the preschool to university level, Learning by Design awards are judged by a pool of architects, designers, and education professionals. Projects are judged not just on the quality of their design, but also how the design meets community needs, supports and enhances pedagogical components that enhance student experience, and contribute to goals of sustainability and social impact. Designs receiving an Outstanding Project recognition are deemed to be “worthy of emulation and of contemporary standard,” according to the Learning by Design website.

Learning By Design recognized that the reimagined Douglass Hall allows the building to meet contemporary students’ needs while preserving the building’s historic character. Designed by BHSM Architects and guided by student data and the College’s commitment to residential excellence, the $18.5 million renovation celebrated the building’s heritage while enhancing student life. Reopening to welcome students in fall 2025, the project added 3,000 square feet of new construction and transformed 8,500 square feet of underutilized space into residential suites. Communal spaces were reimagined as more open and inclusive environments, incorporating sensory-friendly zones and flexible gathering spaces.

Through these renovations, Douglass Hall will continue to serve future generations of Wooster students, fostering meaningful connections and enriching the student experience within a historic campus landmark.
