Program Overview
With 1,496 all-time victories – the second-highest total among NCAA Div. III men’s basketball teams – Wooster has proven to be one of the best in the nation throughout the program’s history, and it shows no signs of letting up. In fact, the Fighting Scots have reached new heights as they currently rank as the winningest NCAA team (all divisions) of the 2000s with a 255-45 record (.850).
The impressive numbers don’t stop there. Wooster has won 12 North Coast Athletic Conference championships in the 25-year history of the league, including nine of the last 12, and earned bids into the NCAA Tournament 14 of the last 15 seasons. The Scots, who have been ranked No. 1 eight times by D3hoops.com weekly top-25 poll, are consistent contenders for the national championship, highlighted by reaching the “Final Four” in both 2003 and 2007.
Wooster, which employs an up-tempo transition game and pressure man-to-man defense, is renowned for its sound fundamentals and team-oriented play. It is an exciting brand of basketball to watch, as evidenced by the Scots ranking among the top-five in Div. III in attendance on an annual basis, and the outstanding support comes from both the community and the student body.
The coaching staff always seeks out a challenging non-league schedule, which has included trips to The Bahamas, Hawaii, Los Angeles, and Texas in recent years, to prepare for the NCAC as well as postseason play. Wooster has also taken international tours during the summer to Italy (2008), Germany and Austria (2004), and England and Scotland (2000).
