Discussion with Historical Fiction Author Sophie Perinot ’86
The College of Wooster will host alumna Sophie Perinot ’86 on Oct. 2, at 1:45 p.m., in the Alley of Lowry Center (1189 Beall Ave.), for a conversation about the launch of her novel, “Ribbons of Scarlet: A Novel of the French Revolution.” The event is free and open to the public. Register online at woosteralumni.org/engage/upcoming-events or email alumni@wooster.edu.
Launching Oct. 1 and written by six bestselling and award-winning authors, “Ribbons of Scarlet” tells the story of the power of women during the French Revolution. Set in late eighteenth-century France, women from gilded salons to the streets of Paris challenge the idea that women do not have a place in politics and decide otherwise in a historical story with ideas that resonate with a modern audience. Perinot and her fellow authors suggest these women are part of a pattern of forgotten females in history.
Perinot, a history major at Wooster, has always had a passion for the subject. She recalls in the bio on her website that she declared her major before anyone else in her class during the first quarter of her freshman year. After graduating from Wooster, she earned a law degree at Northwestern University but left the practice of law to pursue artistic interests, including writing. Her first novel “The Sister Queens,” debuting in 2012 and published by New American Library, explores the bond between sisters Marguerite and Eleanor of Provence, 13th century queens of France and England. Her writing in historical fiction, also including two other novels, “Médicis Daughter,”published in 2015 by Thomas Dunne Books, and “A Day of Fire: A novel of Pompeii,” another collaboration of multiple authors (2014, Knight Media, LLC), allows her to continue the passion for traveling back in time and exploring the past just as she did as a Wooster student.
