Remembering Watershed Moments: The Black Manifesto and the Galpin Takeover

Selections from the College of Wooster Archives Collection

October 14, 2024 – March 14, 2025

Correspondence, clippings, and publications from our College Archives Collection document campus events as they unfolded leading to the publication of The Black Manifesto in Fall 1969 and leading to the takeover of Galpin Hall in Spring 1989.

Twenty years apart, student groups took their growing concerns to the administration. Town halls and public meetings followed many private meetings with college officials. Not satisfied with the outcome of such meetings, student activism took the form of public demand. This exhibit includes some of the documents that help shed light on these two periods of racial unrest on our campus.

The exhibit is available for viewing Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Special arrangements can be made for classes or small groups to view more materials from our collection. For more information contact Denise Monbarren (x2527)
