Symposium Showcases Wooster’s Commitment to Experiential Learning

WOOSTER, Ohio — The College of Wooster will showcase its extensive experiential learning program at a symposium again Thursday, Nov. 3 and this year there will be an awards ceremony for the first time. The event will provide students with an opportunity to present and reflect on the impact of their particular experience in the field and the ways in which they are applying what they learn in the classroom to practical settings.
The program begins at 10 a.m. with a reception and AMRE (Applied Mathematics Research Experience) poster presentation in APEX (Advising, Planning and Experiential Learning Center), which is located in the lower level of Gault Library (1140 Beall Ave.). The more formal AMRE Presentations follows at 10:30 in CoRE (Collaborative Research Environment) on the main level of the library, where teams of students will share the results of their summer experience as consultants on projects submitted by local businesses, non-profit organizations or government agencies or a research experience with Wooster faculty.
At noon, Sarah Bolton, president of The College of Wooster, will host a luncheon in Kittredge Dining Hall (535 E. Wayne Ave.) that will bring business and community partners together with faculty, staff, and students for informal networking opportunities. After lunch, John Ramsay, associate dean for experiential learning and professor of mathematics at Wooster, will present the following awards: Experiential Learning Student Award, given to a student or group of students who has experienced personal growth through experiential learning; Experiential Learning Faculty/Staff Award, given to a member of the faculty or staff who has provided a continued support opportunity to engage in experiential learning; and College of Wooster Community Partner in Experiential Learning Award, presented to an organization who has partnered with us to provide an experiential learning opportunity for College of Wooster students.
Then at 1:15 p.m., there will be sessions featuring presentations by students who participated in the Summer Research programs and APEX Fellowship poster presentations. They will be held in Kittredge Dining Hall (535 E. Wayne Ave.). The Summer Research program provides opportunities for students to work as paid research assistants with faculty, while APEX Fellowships offer structure and mentored support to students engaged in under-paid summer internships or vocational exploration programs.
All presentations are free and open to the public, with the exception of the luncheon which is by invitation only. For more information, contact Vikki Briggs at 330-263-2674 or by email.
