College Mourns the Passing of Emeritus Trustee Dr. John Papp ‘60

WOOSTER, Ohio – Dr. John P. Papp ’60, who served as a trustee of The College of Wooster for 18 years, died on Jan. 17 in East Grand Rapids, Mich. He was 78.
Papp earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Wooster, where he also was quarterback of the Fighting Scots football team, in 1960 and an M.D. from The Ohio State University in 1964. Following service in the U.S. Navy and a residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center, Dr. Papp entered private practice and also embarked on a long teaching career in the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University, where he rose to the rank of clinical professor. He published extensively and was known for his pioneer work in endoscopy.
In 1991, the college’s football stadium was rededicated in Dr. Papp’s honor, and in 1993 he won the Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Papp joined The College of Wooster’s board of trustees in 1994 and served until 2012, when he moved to emeritus status.
