Rev. Alexander Serna-Wallender is New Interfaith Chaplain at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – Rev. Alexander Serna-Wallender has been named the Henry J. Copeland Interfaith Chaplain at The College of Wooster, effective July 5.

Serna-Wallender, an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), comes to Wooster from Columbia University in New York City, where he currently serves as the Earl Hall Religious Life Fellow in the Office of the University Chaplain. In that position, he oversees interfaith programming; plans and facilitates discussions related to issues of faith, identity, service, and justice; and meets one-on-one with students to provide pastoral counseling and discuss vocational discernment.
“Rev. Alex has a deep passion for social justice, having done extensive work with those experiencing homelessness in his home state of Texas, and developing conflict resolution strategies in New Jersey,” said Scott C. Brown, Wooster’s vice president for student affairs and dean of students, in an email to campus announcing the appointment.
Serna-Wallender also has worked as a pastoral education chaplain at Capital Health Medical Center in Hopewell, N.J., and as a pastoral associate at Arch Street Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Penn. Prior to entering the ministry, he taught middle school science for three years in San Antonio, Texas.
Serna-Wallender earned a bachelor’s degree in urban studies and a master’s degree in teaching, both from Trinity University in San Antonio, and master of divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, N.J.
