Constitution Day Lecture to Feature Judge Denise Reilly ‘75
WOOSTER, Ohio – Denise Reilly, a judge on the Minnesota Court of Appeals, will present “Executive Orders in Times of National Insecurity” at the annual Constitution Day Lecture on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at The College of Wooster. The free public lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m., in room 105 of Scovel Hall (944 College Mall). A dessert reception will precede the lecture.
It marks a homecoming of sorts for Reilly, who earned her bachelor of arts degree from Wooster in 1975 and she received a distinguished alumni award in 2006. After graduating from Wooster, she achieved a J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law now Mitchell Hamline School of Law, where she currently serves as a trustee.
In addition to serving as judge on the Court of Appeals, Reilly is also currently an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota Law School where she teaches trial practice.She has previously served as a law clerk for the U.S. District Court of Minnesota, an assistant U.S. attorney in the criminal division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota, and a judge for the Fourth Judicial District Court where she was assigned to civil and adult criminal and juvenile courts. In addition, she was an attorney for Lindquist & Vennum, PLLP, in Minneapolis for three years.Reilly was recognized as Trial Judge of t
he Year by the American Board of Trial Advocacy in 2010, earned the Outstanding Judicial Service to the Community Award in 2009 (Minnesota chapter) by the Minnesota District Judges Foundation, and was awarded the 2008 Judicial Professional Award by the Hennepin County Bar Association.
She currently serves on the children’s justice initiative advisory committee of the Minnesota Supreme Court as well as many other civic and community activities. She has also presented at the Department of Justice conferences in Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Costa Rica on the topic of children victims and witnesses in human trafficking.
Constitution Day is intended to celebrate not only the birthday of our government, but also the ideas that make us Americans. The U.S. government has designated Sept. 17 as Constitution Day to commemorate the Sept. 17, 1787, signing of the U.S. Constitution.
