Annual Phi Sigma Tau Lecture to Feature Adriel Trott

WOOSTER, Ohio – Adriel Trott, associate professor of philosophy at Wabash College, will present “The Matter of Sexual Difference in Aristotle’s Biology” at The College of Wooster’s annual Phi Sigma Tau lecture on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m., in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.).
According to Trott, “Aristotle’s account of sexual reproduction is often considered the root of the hierarchical opposition between form as male and matter as female. But form in the figure of semen curiously works through material elemental powers of heat and air. This talk considers the sense in which semen and thus form in generation is interrelated and dependent on material to do its work and the implications of this position for thinking the gender binary.”

Trott is the author of “Aristotle on the Nature of Community,” and her research focuses on how ancient philosophy can be a resource both for diagnosing contemporary conceptions of political life, of being human, of nature, of gender, and for presenting alternatives to these accounts. She received her bachelor’s degree from The College of William and Mary and both a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Villanova University.

Phi Sigma Tau is the international honor society in philosophy. Founded in 1930 and incorporated as a nonprofit corporation in 1955, the Society now has a network of over 200 chapters throughout the United States and Canada, at both public and private institutions of higher learning. The purpose of Phi Sigma Tau is to encourage interest and activity among students and to promote ties between philosophy departments in accredited institutions. The College of Wooster’s department of philosophy has been a member of Phi Sigma Tau since March 1983.
