Wooster Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo Concert Saturday, Feb. 9
WOOSTER – The College of Wooster’s Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jeffrey Lindberg, and Jazz Combo, directed by Greg Slawson, will present a concert on Saturday, Feb 9, at 7:30 p.m., in Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center (525 E. University St.). The concert will feature guest guitar soloist Henry Johnson.
Selections to be performed include Wes Montgomery’s “Road Song” and “Naptown Blues,” Jimmy Forrest’s “Night Train,” Oliver Nelson’s “Step Right Up,” and Henry Mancini’s “Dreamsville,” as well as “Down by the Riverside.”
Johnson is a Grammy-nominated guitarist and vocalist whose musical roots run deep into gospel, blues, and jazz. He has released seven recordings under his own name and over 40 with other artists. His most recent group, The Organ Express, is patterned after the hard-swinging jazz groups of the 1960s using the instrumentation of guitar, saxophone, organ, and drums. Besides composing and performing, he is also a contributing writer for Just Jazz Guitar, Downbeat, and Jazz Improv, as well as an instructor of jazz guitar studies at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts.
Lindberg, professor of music at Wooster, is also the director of the highly acclaimed Chicago Jazz Orchestra, Chicago’s oldest professional jazz orchestra in continuous operation. Slawson is the jazz piano and music technology instructor at Wooster.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and are available at Buehler’s Milltown and Towne Market, the Wilson Bookstore, or at the door the night of the concert. For more information, contact Jeff Lindberg at 330-263-2047 or jlindberg@wooster.edu.
