“The Normal Heart” On Stage Feb. 28-March 2 in Freedlander Theatre

WOOSTER, Ohio — The department of theatre and dance at The College of Wooster will present Larry Kramer’s “The Normal Heart” Feb. 28-March 2, in Freedlander Theatre (329 E. University St.). The production, which begins at 7:30 p.m. each evening, is $9 for general admission tickets and $6 for senior citizens, faculty, and non-College of Wooster students (Wooster students and staff are admitted free, but must pick up their complimentary ticket at the box office ahead of time). It is recommended for mature audiences only.
Directed by Jimmy Noriega, associate professor of theatre and Latin American studies, “The Normal Heart” reveals what life was like at the onset of the HIV/AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 1980s. The events focus on a small group of gay activists who fight to bring social and political attention to a health emergency that was being ignored by the government and which would eventually become a global pandemic. According to acclaimed journalist Frances FitzGerald, this play “put politics and journalism to shame for the cover-up of a major disaster and one of the great moral dramas of our time.”
In addition to the production, Wooster is hosting 12 large sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt that will be on display in Freedlander Lobby and Shoolroy Theatre from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily beginning on Monday, Feb. 25, and ending after the final performance of “The Normal Heart” on Saturday, March 2.  The quilt display will also feature educational information, timelines, documentaries, and a quiet space for memorial and reflection.
