Patrick Carr to Deliver Stieglitz Memorial Lecture on Nov. 12

WOOSTER, Ohio — Patrick Carr, associate professor of sociology and director of the justice program at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, will present “Billy Clubs and Terry Stops: Minority Youth Experiences of Police” on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at The College of Wooster’s Stieglitz Memorial Lecture. The talk, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.).

Carr’s lecture will draw on 20 years of research with young people growing up in high crime communities of Philadelphia. He will discuss both the lived reality of urban policing as it is experienced by minority youth and attempts by Carr and others to change the narrative.

His research focuses on young people and policing, youth violence and social control, and the transition to adulthood. He is the author of “Clean Streets: Controlling Crime, Maintaining Order, and Building Community Activism” and co-author of “Hollowing Out the Middle: The Rural Brain Drain and What it Means for America.” His work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, and on NPR stations, and he’s had editorials published in The Root, The Huffington Post, and The Atlantic. Carr received bachelor and master degrees from University College Dublin and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

The Stieglitz Memorial Lecture was founded by Dr. and Mrs. Lewis N. Stieglitz of Concord, N.H., as a tribute to their son, Martin, a Wooster student who was majoring in sociology when he lost his life in an off-campus house fire on Feb. 11, 1989. The Stieglitz Memorial Fund and the departments of sociology and anthropology are co-sponsoring the lecture.
