Bowen Selected Dean for Curriculum and Academic Engagement at Wooster
WOOSTER, Ohio – Associate Professor of Mathematics Jennifer Bowen has been selected as the next Dean for Curriculum and Academic Engagement (DCAE) at The College of Wooster, it was announced recently by Provost Lisa Perfetti. Bowen will officially assume the DCAE duties on July 1, 2020, from Bryan Karazsia, who held the position for three academic years.
As DCAE, Bowen will look to maintain and advance the academic integrity at the College by collaborating, from an interdivisional perspective, with a diverse and talented group of faculty and staff. Bowen’s duties include oversight of various offices that offer academic support, the promotion and facilitation of curricular innovations as well as broader college-wide curricular offerings, and administration of Wooster’s first-year seminar program.
“Jen brings to her role as DCAE an already impressive track record of leadership and college service,” stated Perfetti. “As a first-year seminar instructor, a participant in Academic Registration and Creative Horizons (ARCH), and a dedicated Posse mentor, Jen has had significant opportunities to understand the challenges our students face and how our policies and teaching approaches can support them in their academic and personal journeys.”
Bowen has been a faculty member at Wooster since 2007, teaching a wide number of courses, including abstract algebra, statistics, calculus and analytic geometry, multivariate calculus, linear algebra, and number theory. Her research interests are in non-associative algebras and matrix rings and knot theory.
In addition to her math-related publications, Bowen has authored several publications dedicated to inclusive pedagogy and was key in the early efforts of Wooster’s STEM Success Initiative. She was chair of the math department for five years, leading the development of the Statistical and Data Sciences major, and served terms on a couple of faculty committees.
“I am excited to start in the role of DCAE this summer,” Bowen remarked. “I believe wholeheartedly in Wooster’s liberal arts mission, and have worked passionately as a teacher-scholar, mentor, and administrator to support this mission.”
Bowen earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Boston College and both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Virginia.
