WOOSTER, Ohio – The sixth annual Wooster Science Café will continue this semester with four more discussions in the series. All four will be held at Spoon Market & Deli (144 W. Liberty St.) in Wooster starting at 7 p.m.
Laura Sirot, associate professor of biology at The College of Wooster and one of the co-founders and co-coordinators of the Science Café, says “We are happy to be able to continue to bring discussion of science-related topics to the Wooster community.”
The fifth discussion of the series will be on Tuesday, Feb. 4, with Niki Spahich, scientific technical editor of the The Scientist and president of Science Riot, presenting “Merging Stand Up Comedy with Science Outreach.” Spahich will discuss Science Riot, a nonprofit program that provides free training for science professionals, believes in the power of humor to connect with broad audiences, and humanizes scientists.
On Tuesday, March 3, Shoshanah Inwood, assistant professor in the School of Environment and Natural Resources at The Ohio State University who specializes in community and economic development through food and agriculture, will present “Bringing the Bounty of Wayne County to our Schools,” for the sixth discussion of the series. She will discuss a project in Wayne County that connects local farmers with local schools to create healthy school meals featuring locally grown food, while creating new economic opportunities for farmers.
The seventh discussion of the series will take place on Tuesday, April 7, with Laura Burch, associate professor of French and Francophone studies at The College of Wooster, presenting “Are You Serious? Women in Science in France Before 1800.” In this talk, Burch will examine what counts as scientific research, assumptions about who can do serious science, and the difference between how we think about those issues now compared to 1800.
The eighth and final Science Café of the spring semester on Tuesday, May 5, will feature Denise Ellsworth, program director of pollinator education at The Ohio State University, presenting “Diversity and Seasonality of Wild Bees in Ohio.”
Sirot added, “Everyone is welcome! Come for the free appetizers and stay for the great discussion. Thanks to Spoon Market & Deli, The College of Wooster, and The Ohio State University for the ongoing support.” The other coordinators of the Science Café are Cathy Herms, Stephanie Strand, and Erzsébet and Peter Regan.
