Carrie Buckwalter

Carrie Buckwalter ’24

Carrie Buckwalter ’24 is a political science and psychology major from Lancaster, Pennsylvania

As one of the inaugural winners of the College’s Model UN Leadership Award merit scholarship, Carrie has been closely involved in Model UN since her first semester at Wooster. She has been a key part of the team’s award-winning performances at the American Model UN in Chicago and the National Model UN in New York, including guiding the team as Head Delegate last semester when Wooster’s representation of Ukraine was recognized with an Outstanding Delegation award, which is the highest ranking a team can achieve. After serving as Vice President of the team last year, Carrie was selected by her peers to be the Model UN President this year, a role that she will perform this semester alongside mentoring students on the UN as the Teaching Apprentice in Professor Kent Kille’s United Nations System course.

For the past year, she also has served as head Voter Engagement Intern for our campus get-out-the-vote efforts.

In addition, she spends time volunteering through the O’huddle Service House and is a Peer Health Educator.

Carrie’s Independent Study will look at how the Dark Triad personality traits (Machiavellianism, Psychopathy and Narcissism) affect conspiratorial belief and political engagement.

After Wooster, she is hoping to attend graduate school to pursue a degree in Mental Health Counseling.

In his free time, Jaylin enjoys spending time in his hammock, painting, cooking, and playing tennis.

For his Independent Study, he would like to explore the Impact of reducing borrowing costs in entrepreneurship to reduce the racial wealth gap between White and Black families.

Post Wooster, Jaylin will be working full-time as a Financial Advisory Development Tract (FADT) Analyst at JP Morgan Chase in Westerville, OH, while also working to earn an MBA in Finance and a series of Finra licenses.

Matt Mariola

Matt Mariola

Matt Mariola is a professor and chair of the environmental studies program.

Professor Mariola began his teaching career at The College of Wooster in 2008. He earned a Ph.D. in rural sociology from The Ohio State University, an M.S. in environmental studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from The College of Wooster.

Professor teaches a variety of courses covering topics in environmental science and sustainability, including:

Environment & Society
Sustainable Agriculture
From Farm to Table
Waste & the Environment
Experiments in Everyday Life

His research interests explore the worldwide movement by small family farmers and peasant farming communities to transition away from industrialized, input-intensive, export-oriented agricultural practices and (back) towards more ecological, low-input, and locally-oriented farm systems. This work has connected him to Amish farmers in Ohio, as well as farmers in Thailand and southern Chile, as he seeks to understand the social forces that propel and impede these changes.

Other research topics of interest include local food cooperatives, biological pesticides, and campus gardens as learning sites.

At Wooster, he supervises the campus learning garden behind Ruth Williams Hall of Science.
