WOOSTER, Ohio – With phrasing such as “renowned in academic circles around the world” and “what goes on behind the facades of (its) attractive buildings is more impressive than the structures themselves,” the 2018 edition of Fiske Guide to Colleges accurately portrays The College of Wooster while featuring “the intellectual refuge in the countryside of Ohio” once again.
For more than 30 years, the Fiske Guide has annually helped students, parents, and guidance counselors by taking a selective, subjective, and systematic look at 300-plus top colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom.
In addition to pointing out Wooster’s “emphasis on global perspectives and mentored research,” this year’s listing details the path a student takes from first-year seminar to senior Independent Study (I.S.) and all the opportunities in between, such as the Applied Methods and Research Experience (AMRE) and the sophomore researchprogram.
Fiske Guide also commends Advising, Planning and Experiential Learning (APEX), noting that the center “helps coordinate opportunities for internships and study abroad, which has been expanding as students seek the world.”
An overview of the architecture, student body, campus climate, financial aid, housing, social life, traditions, and the athletic program is included as well as comments from current students and recent graduates. For them, it almost inevitably comes back to I.S., with one nicely summing up Wooster by saying, “Having that big project on the horizon from the day you enroll changes the way you engage with your education, and I think that brings an element of intensity, dedication, and commitment to the academics.”
Edward B. Fiske served for 17 years as education editor of the New York Times, where he realized that college-bound students and their families needed better information on which to base their educational choices. He is also the coauthor of the Fiske Guide to Getting into the Right College and Fiske Real College Essays That Work.
