Erika Meitner and Dave Lucas to Give Lecture and Reading of Their Works

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster welcomes writers Erika Meitner and Dave Lucas on Wednesday, Feb. 27, for a lecture and reading of their works. The writing craft lecture will take place at 3:30 p.m., in room 142 of Kauke Hall (400 E. University St.) and the joint reading of their works will take place at 7 p.m., in room 045 of the Ruth W. Williams Hall of Life Sciences (931 College Mall). They will also hold a book signing.

“The English department is thrilled to welcome these two amazing writers to campus. Meitner and Lucas are both at the forefront of contemporary poetry, writing about, among other issues, history, race, religion, gun violence, and environmental decline,” said Robin Schaer, visiting assistant professor of English at Wooster.

Meitner is the author of five books of poems, and her most recent collection, “Holy Moly Carry Me,” received the 2018 National Jewish Book Award and is a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her poems take readers into the heart of southern Appalachia―its highways and strip malls and gun culture, its fragility and danger―as the speaker wrestles with what it means to be the only Jewish family in an evangelical neighborhood and the anxieties of raising one white son and one black son amidst racial tensions and school lockdown drills, according to Schaer. She received her bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and two master’s degrees from the University of Virginia.

Lucas is currently the poet laureate in the state of Ohio and author of “Weather,” a collection of poetry that explores his hometown, Cleveland, and its terrain, industries, and communities. It was awarded the 2012 Ohioana Book Award for Poetry. His poetry has appeared in a number of publications, including the Paris Review and Slate. He earned his bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University, master of fine arts degree from the University of Virginia, and a master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Both events are presented by the English department with co-sponsorship by Wooster Hillel and the religious studies department. Additional information about the lecture and reading is available by email at rschaer@wooster.edu or by calling 330-263-2575.
