22nd Annual Bell Lecture to Feature Kim Taylor-Thompson
WOOSTER, Ohio – Kim Taylor-Thompson, professor of clinical law at New York University School of Law, will present “Who Counts as a Child? How Race Trumps Science in Criminal Justice” at the 22nd annual Bell Distinguished Lectureship in Law on Thursday, April 18, at The College of Wooster. The free public lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.). A dessert reception will precede the lecture.
Taylor-Thompson teaches courses related to criminal law and community and criminal defense. Her teaching and scholarship focus on the impact of race and gender in public policy – particularly criminal and juvenile justice policy – and the need to prepare lawyers to meet the demands of practice in and on behalf of marginalized communities. She was awarded the NYU Distinguished Teacher Award in 2018 and was previously one of five faculty to receive a 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Faculty Award.
Prior to joining academia, she spent a decade at the D.C. Public Defender Service, ultimately serving as its director. She recently took a leave from teaching and served for three years as the chief executive officer of Duke Corporate Education, ranked by Financial Times as the number one global provider of customized executive education. She received a B.A. degree from Brown University and J.D. from Yale Law School.
The Bell Distinguished Lectureship in Law was endowed in 1999 by Jennie M. Bell and Samuel H. Bell ’47, a federal judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. The purpose is to engage students, faculty, members of the legal profession, and members of the community in a legal issue that has broad implications for society. The Bells hope, by way of this lectureship, to bring the best minds of the legal profession to Wooster students and the local community. This lectureship also joins their long-held affection for the law and faith in the values derived from a liberal arts education.
