College Mourns the Passing of Glenn Bucher
WOOSTER, Ohio – Glenn Bucher, former dean of the faculty and chair of the department of religious studies at The College of Wooster, passed away on Wednesday, June 26. He was 79.
Bucher joined Wooster’s faculty in 1970 and was appointed the James F. Lincoln Professor of Religious Studies in 1981. He served two terms as the chair of the department and was the dean of faculty from 1985-89.
Bucher’s scholarship included social ethics and the sociology of religion, and during his tenure at Wooster, he was credited with developing an ethics and society internship program, leading a study-travel seminar to Mexico, directing two student residential program dormitories, and serving on major faculty committees.
Bucher went on to be the dean of faculty, vice president of academic affairs, and professor of social ethics at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga., and president of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif., from 1992-99.
Bucher earned a bachelor’s degree from Elizabethtown College, a master’s of divinity from Union Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in the sociology of religion from Boston University.
