Geology major gains hands-on experience in his hometown

Mason Minerva '20

Mason Minerva ’20 served as an APEX Fellow at Impact Earth, an environmental consulting company in Rochester, New York. Established in 2014, Impact Earth provides zero-waste services and products to the Rochester and Finger Lakes Region with a goal to promote an eco-friendly economy. To support Young Earth’s goal, Minerva went to local school cafeterias to help students sort through compost, landfill, and recycling waste from their lunches. When the school year ended, Minerva’s role at Impact Earth expanded, as he served in multiple departments and worked with the local farmer market. “In small companies, it is important for everyone to help out in every department when they can,” said Minerva.

Through his APEX Fellowship, Minerva learned to apply his academic coursework in a professional setting while expanding his career network. However, Minerva’s Impact Earth experience also hits close to home, as he served his hometown of Rochester. “I chose to intern with Impact Earth for a number of reasons,” said Minerva, “but the biggest one was that I wanted to make a difference in a community that was important to me.”
