Constitution Day Lecture to Feature Alumnus Wayne Cornelius ‘67

WOOSTER, Ohio – Wayne Cornelius, Distinguished Professor of Political Science Emeritus and the Theodore Gildred Professor of U.S.-Mexican Relations emeritus at the University of California San Diego, will present “Making Immigration Law and Policy in a Time of Lawlessness” at the annual Constitution Day Lecture on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at The College of Wooster. The free public lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m., in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.). A dessert reception will precede the lecture.
Cornelius, currently a visiting professor of political science at Reed College, specializes in immigration policy (U.S., Mexico, Central America, Spain, Japan) and Mexican politics and development. He is the author, co-author, or editor of nearly 300 publications dealing with these subjects, including 15 books on Mexican migration. His most recent research, supported by the Inter-American Development Bank, has focused on Mexico as a country of transit migration from Central America to the United States and he is a frequent source for reporting on immigration issues by The New York Times, Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times. In addition, his research has been featured on NPR and the BBC, and he has made two appearances on CBS’ “60 Minutes.”
After earning a bachelor of arts degree from Wooster in 1967, where he was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009, Cornelius received his Ph.D. from Stanford University. He started teaching political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before going to UC San Diego where he spent the next 36 years, which included doing field research with students nearly every year in rural Mexico.
Cornelius has been a visiting faculty member at Harvard University, Princeton University, and Oxford University as well as a research fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the Institute for Labor Studies in Germany, and the Universidad Complutense in Spain. He is the founding director of two internationally-recognized interdisciplinary research centers, the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies and the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies, both at UC San Diego. In 2015, UC awarded him the Edward A. Dickson Prize for distinguished post-retirement contributions to student training, research, and national and community service.
Constitution Day is intended to celebrate not only the birthday of our government, but also the ideas that make us Americans. The U.S. government has designated Sept. 17 as Constitution Day to commemorate the Sept. 17, 1787, signing of the U.S. Constitution.
