Scot Symphonic Band to Perform on March 1

Scot Symphonic Band

WOOSTER, Ohio — The sights and sounds of Scotland will descend upon McGaw Chapel when The College of Wooster’s Scot Symphonic Band performs in concert on Sunday, March 1, at 2:30 p.m. (340 East University Street). The concert will feature soloist Mario Marini and the Wooster Pipe Band and Highland Dancers.

This pre-tour home concert, “Dreams,” features music by composers Rossano Galante, Erika Svanoe, William Cahn, R.B. Hall, and the Ohio premiere of “From the Ashes” by Paul Cravens, commissioned in part by The College of Wooster Scot Symphonic Band.

Conducted by Joel Graham, the band has entertained audiences nationwide during its annual spring tour since 1976. The ensemble’s distinctive uniforms, which consist of kilts with hand-sewn pleats made from the College’s MacLeod tartan plaid, represent Wooster’s Scottish Presbyterian heritage. This year’s tour will take them to northern Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Graham is in his first year as Director of Bands at Wooster after teaching music history and theory at George Mason University, where he earned a D.M.A. He received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Southern Maine and master of arts degree from the University of New Hampshire. In 2016, he was named a semi-finalist in the American Prize in conducting for college wind ensembles. In addition to conducting and teaching, Graham maintains an active performance schedule playing the trumpet and trombone.

The concert is free and open to the public. Additional information about the concert is available by phone (330-263-1941) or by email (jgraham@wooster.edu).
