Ahmet Atay Receives Award from Central States Communication Association

WOOSTER, Ohio – Ahmet Atay, associate professor of communication studies and global media & digital studies at The College of Wooster, received The Innovator Award from the Central States Communication Association’s (CSCA) Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Caucus in April.

Atay’s book, Queer Communication Pedagogy, co-edited by Sandra Pensoneau-Conway, associate professor of communication studies at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, addresses queer issues and current events from a communication perspective to articulate a queer communication pedagogy. By putting communication pedagogy and queer studies into dialogue, the edited book investigates how queer theory and critical communication pedagogy intersect in pedagogical spaces.

According to David Kahl, Jr., associate professor of communication at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, “The great benefit of this work is its attention to the ways in which critical communication pedagogy and queer theory can be unified to create a new pedagogical paradigm, a responsive pedagogy about communication, difference, and praxis.”

The Innovator Award honors one or more outstanding books from the past five years on sexual orientation and gender identity, including feminism, queer theory, gender studies, and human sexuality. The CSCA is a professional, academic organization of university professors, communication professionals, and primary and secondary school teachers.
