Five Ways a Liberal Arts College (Especially Wooster) Might Be Right for You

Four people crouching on the ground of a mastodon dig organized by The College of Wooster

You’ve probably heard a lot about finding your fit as you explore college options and think about the aspects of the college experience that will work best for you. How far away from home do you want to be in college? Do you have an idea of the types of careers that interest you? Are you happiest in a big, busy place, a small close-knit community, or something in between?

Liberal arts colleges like The College of Wooster are focused just on undergraduate studies. They are typically smaller, offering students a more personalized experience, and academic programs emphasize a more well-rounded approach to learning vs. training for a specific job. At The College of Wooster, students are free to pursue multiple interests, from chemistry and dance or neuroscience and history, and emerge with critical-thinking and research skills that prepare them for graduate school or a variety of career paths.

If you are leaning toward a liberal arts college, you have a lot of strong choices. Do your homework and ask questions as you take college tours. If you’re curious about what makes The College of Wooster special, we’ve outlined five (of many) reasons here:

Mentored undergraduate research

We’re known for it. Only two schools have been named to the U.S. News rankings list every year for outstanding undergraduate research opportunities and senior capstone projects: Wooster and Princeton. And while many colleges require a thesis or capstone project, at Wooster you’ll work closely with a faculty mentor. The mentor relationship is something our graduates often say is what they remember most fondly about their Wooster experience.

Global community

Our campus in Wooster, Ohio, is one of the most geographically diverse in Ohio, with students from 68 countries and 48 states. Our students have abundant opportunities to travel and study abroad no matter their course of study. Study abroad opportunities are available in more than 60 countries and 35 percent of Wooster students choose to participate in an international experience. Even if you never leave campus, you can take part in a variety of signature experiences that celebrate the cultures of our students.

Experiential learning

Internships, research fellowships, and consulting projects are available and plentiful through partnerships The College of Wooster has with hundreds of companies and organizations throughout the world.

Interdisciplinary education

We’re serious when we say you can graduate on time with a double major or minor in fields of study that are as diverse as your interests. Wooster also offers pathway programs, which are interdisciplinary programs separate from a major or minor. Pathways, like Digital & Visual Storytelling, Data Exploration & Communication, Public Health, and Museum & Archival Studies, give students from all majors the chance to see how interests and strengths can become a career.

Small campus environment, big opportunities to get involved

Wooster is a close-knit place and students are busy outside the classroom. About 30 percent of our students play on one of our varsity sports teams. Our dance, music, and art programs give students ample performance opportunities. With more than 100 student organizations, our campus benefits from the activism and ideas brought by passionate students who push for a more equitable, caring world.
