The College of Wooster welcomes Julia Clarke for lecture on “The Secret Lives of Dinosaurs” Oct. 12

Julia Clarke, John A. and Katherine G. Jackson Chair in Geobiology and associate dean of research and education impact at the University of Texas at Austin

The College of Wooster will welcome Julia Clarke as she presents a lecture titled “The Secret Lives of Dinosaurs” on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in Lean Lecture Hall, located in Wishart Hall (303 E. University Street).

This event is presented by the Phi Beta Kappa honor society in conjunction with the departments of Biology and Earth Sciences. The lecture will focus on new research revealing more about the colors and sounds of dinosaurs as well as explain how x-ray computed tomography is being used to look at dinosaurs’ anatomies in a new light.

Clarke is the John A. and Katherine G. Jackson Chair in Geobiology and associate dean of research and education impact at the University of Texas at Austin. Her work focuses on vertebrate paleontology and the evolution of birds from the time of dinosaurs, with a specific aim toward how new structures and functions develop in geological time, especially the development of the vocal organ.  Since receiving a bachelor’s degree from Brown University in 1995 and a doctorate degree from Yale University’s Department of Geology and Geophysics in 2002, Clarke has published over 100 papers in various publications, including 14 in the prestigious journals Science and Nature and is the head of an international field program in paleontology. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, American Ornithological Society, and the Anatomical Society.

This lecture is supported by the Phi Beta Kappa’s Visiting Scholar Program. The Phi Beta Kappa Society is a national honor society founded in 1776, and for 67 years, the Society has provided its chapters across the country with the opportunity to engage with some of the most distinguished scholars in the country through the Visiting Scholars Program.
