The College of Wooster is once again considered one of the “Leading Institutions for International Students,” ranking No. 30 among baccalaureate colleges and universities in the United States, according to Open Doors, an annual report sponsored by the U.S. Department of State that tracks trends in international student enrollment.

The ranking is based on the actual number of international students studying at the College, which Open Doors reported as 295 students at Wooster this year. The report showed that the United States hosted more than one million (1,057,188) international students during the 2022/2023 academic year, a 12% increase compared to the previous academic year and the fastest growth rate in more than 40 years. Reported by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education (IIE) on Nov. 13, 2023, the report provides an annual benchmark on the state of international educational exchange and student mobility. Also, according to the Open Doors press release, “International students accounted for 6% of the total U.S. higher education population and contributed nearly $38 billion to the U.S. economy according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.”

Continuing to rank as a leading institution for international students affirms Wooster’s commitment to having a diverse, inclusive, safe, and welcoming community. The global campus at Wooster, along with the small classes led by faculty who are leaders in their fields and excellent research opportunities, benefits all students. Last week, during the College’s celebration of International Education Week, Nov. 6-11, students participated in a number of events exploring international issues and the various cultures that the global community offers. The week culminated in Wooster’s signature Culture Show (see the video and find out more here). A worldwide event, celebrated on Wooster’s campus for more than 30 years, International Education Week celebrates the benefits of international education and the exchanging of cultures worldwide.

Wooster has been listed on the Open Doors list of the top 40 leading institutions consistently since 2018. Founded in 1919, the Institute of International Education conducts an annual census of international students in the United States. Named the Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, it has long been regarded as the comprehensive information resource on international students and scholars in the United States and on U.S. students studying abroad.
