MLK Day Book Talk with Ric S. Sheffield

Ric S. Sheffield grew up in Knox County, Ohio.  He has recently written a memoir, We Got By:  A Black Family’s Journey in the Heartland, describing his family’s history in Coshocton and Knox Counties.  Come and hear him talk about his book and his family’s history at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 15, 2024 in the Andrews Library CoRE Cube (1140 Beall Ave., Wooster, Ohio). “Spanning four generations and assessing the legacies of traumatic events (arrests, murders, suicide) that are inextricable from the racial dynamics of the small community his family called home, this gripping memoir is a heartfelt, clear-eyed, and rare chronicle of Black life in the rural Ohio…And yet, they overcame the obstacles and managed to persist: they got by.”  There will be a book signing following the event and books will be available for purchase.  Please contact Mark Gooch (mgooch@wooster.edu) for more information.

Ric S. Sheffield is Professor of Sociology & Legal Studies Emeritus at Kenyon College.  He is a former Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio.  He is founding director and the principal investigator for the Knox County Black History Archives.

This event is a collaboration with the Wayne County Public Library and The College of Wooster Robert C. Mayer Bookstore.
