Independent Study inspirations and their lasting reach take center stage in summer 2024 Wooster magazine

Wooster Magazine: Summer 2024 cover

The College of Wooster signature Independent Study capstone program unites Wooster seniors and alumni in an achievement that confers upon them a sense of honor and confidence to carry with them throughout their professional lives. Inspired with research questions and topics meaningful to them, students design a project, research study, or artistic invention to solve a problem, express an idea, and create new knowledge in their own field. For some students, I.S. uncovers a wonder and eagerness to further their study in the area. The summer 2024 issue of Wooster magazine not only showcases some of the wonders explored by the Class of 2024 but also shares the stories of alumni who built upon the foundation of their I.S. for ongoing research, professional work, and everyday inspiration.

This issue additionally highlights this year’s commencement celebration, a culminating event that welcomed more than 3,700 people to celebrate Wooster’s newest alumni. The Oak Grove section also includes congratulations and thanks to this year’s retiring faculty and staff, “Mentoring Matchup” with Désirée Weber, associate professor and chair of political science and her sophomore research assistant Abhishek Manhas ’26, a double major in mathematics and computer science, and the latest College news and achievements of faculty, staff, and students. Tartan Ties features photos from the Wooster on the Move event series with President Anne McCall, “Scot Volunteer” with Betsy O’Brien Anderson ’94, and an author profile with Michael Bernstein ’11 who wrote an article for TIME magazine in April introducing audiences to his book’s topic, the “nocebo effect.”

The summer 2024 edition of Wooster magazine is available online here and past issues of the magazine are available in the Open Works repository.
