Communication studies alumnus creates renewable energy business in California

Jay Cutting ’08, a communication studies alumnus from The College of Wooster, began as a hard worker from the beginning of his college career. “I tried to stay very busy,” Cutting shared. “I attended a lot of extracurricular activities and events.”
As a cornerback, safety, and special teams’ player of the Fighting Scots football team, Cutting spent his time in college building up collaboration and leadership positions. His I.S. helped him develop his research and work ethic, skills which would prove integral to post-graduation. “I’m not ashamed to say that I didn’t get I.S. done the first time,” he said. “Dr. Bostdorff gave up her summer, and we worked through my I.S., and I was able to finish it that summer of my senior year. I’m indebted to her.”
Cutting’s I.S., a rhetorical analysis of President Barack Obama’s second term reelection speeches, allowed him to become a more politically active citizen, knocking on doors and registering voters while researching his project. This direct communication aided him later when he began working in sales for gym memberships and medical sales. Now, Cutting is the principal developer of ReVamp Energy, a renewable energy firm that builds energy systems and sells them to residents in the Greater Los Angeles area of California.
“I [originally] created ReVamp as a sales and marketing company in 2015,” Cutting explained when asked how the company expanded to creating solar energy. “I started seeing that the industry was evolving and prepared for that.”
ReVamp Energy now has contracts with big businesses such as Costco and Target and has installed over 1,000 renewable energy systems since its start. “My time at Wooster—being in a liberal arts setting and working on the foundations and pillars of education—is really what allowed me to be successful,” Cutting said. “Being able to communicate efficiently is powerful in my line of work.”
