Wooster mourns the passing of Elbridge Carl Zimmerman ’54, professor of computer science

Elbridge Carl Zimmerman ’54, emeritus director of academic computer services and professor of computer science at The College of Wooster, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2020, at age 88.

Zimmerman graduated from the College in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in physics and returned in the fall of 1968 to begin his tenure as director of academic computer services. During his 28 years working at the College, Zimmerman established the importance of computer science in a liberal arts setting, designing the first computer science curriculum as well as establishing the College’s first academic computer center. In addition, he co-authored and published the much used college textbook Primer on Pascal.

In his free time, as a lover of classical music and the choral arts, Zimmerman sang in various choirs. Notably, he performed on stage with Erie Mills, future opera singer, while she was a student at the College and sang under Robert Shaw.

Zimmerman’s full obituary, available here, notes that memorial services will be held at a later date.
