WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster has launched a comprehensive fund-raising campaign to support its distinctive educational mission. Wooster’s Promise: A Campaign for Our Future aims to raise $165 million for five major priorities: student financial aid, academic strength, experiential education, the life sciences, and The Wooster Fund. The goal was announced Friday during a 50-minute Facebook Live event broadcast from Freedlander Theatre on the college’s campus.
Since the leadership phase of the campaign began on July 1, 2013, the college has raised $150 million, including 23 seven- and eight-figure commitments from trustees, alumni, and foundations. Now that effort is expanding to engage the broader community of Wooster alumni, parents, and friends between now and June 30, 2018.
“A Wooster education empowers students to have a positive impact in the world. That’s Wooster’s promise,” said campaign chair Blake Moore ’80. “This campaign is about keeping that promise for generations to come. This is our moment to say we are Wooster – and proud of it.”
Friday’s interactive, multimedia broadcast, streamed live to alumni and friends around the world, showcased the transformative impact of mentored student research, the special bond between students and their faculty mentors, the importance of innovative programs like APEX, and the critical role of student financial aid in keeping all these elements of a Wooster education within reach. The broadcast placed a fitting exclamation point at the end of the daylong Senior Research Symposium, during which hundreds of seniors shared insights from their yearlong capstone mentored research projects. It also featured the premiere of a new campaign video. The broadcast is archived on Facebook for those who missed the live stream.
“Wooster has a strong and remarkable history,” Bolton told the audience, “but we cannot rest on that. Help us move Wooster forward – to create a powerful, consequential, and transformative education for generations of students to come.”
Next up for Bolton and Wooster’s development team, a series of five regional campaign launch events in Cleveland, New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and San Francisco.
The College of Wooster is America’s premier college for mentored undergraduate research. Wooster offers an excellent, comprehensive liberal arts education, culminating in a rigorous senior project, in which each student works one-on-one with a faculty mentor to conceive, organize and complete a significant research project on a topic of the student’s own choosing. Through this distinctive program, every Wooster student develops abilities valued by employers and graduate schools alike: independent judgment, analytical ability, creativity, project-management and time-management skills, and strong written and oral communication skills. Founded in 1866, the college enrolls approximately 2,000 students.
