Wooster introduces ScotShare electric carshare program for students, faculty, and staff
The College of Wooster introduced a new electric carshare program called ScotShare, reflecting the College’s commitment to sustainability and an exciting opportunity for members of the College community. Students, faculty, and staff can rent and use one of two available Chevy Bolt cars at a rate of $9 per hour, including electricity, insurance, and up to 25 miles of driving per hour.
“We’re excited to offer the ScotShare electric car service for our students, faculty, and staff,” said President Anne McCall. “It allows members of our community to make short trips in an energy efficient way and supports our commitment to environmental stewardship.”
Electric vehicles like these, outfitted with Wooster pride, produce lower emissions and are three to four times more efficient than gasoline-powered vehicles. They also reduce noise and have lower maintenance and upkeep costs with the money saved by not needing gasoline.
Offered through a partnership between the College and Sway Mobility, the carsharing service allows users to save money by only paying for a car when they need it. According to AAA, the average cost to own a car is over $10,000 a year, factoring in car payments, gas, parking, insurance, and maintenance. Using a carshare a handful of times a month for necessary trips can save thousands of dollars a year. Carshare is great for trips to the grocery store, getting to sporting or club events, healthcare appointments, visiting friends or family in another city, running errands, picking up a friend or roommate from the airport, and more.
Step-by-step instructions are available at woosterscotshare.com Users download an app and sign up to rent one of the cars and complete a verification process and motor vehicle record check. Frequently asked questions about the program are also answered on the website.
