Collaboration in Silence: An Investigation of the Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in Treatment for Children with Selective Mutism

The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical practices utilized by speech-language pathologists (SLPs)when providing services to preschool to elementary-aged children diagnosed with selective mutism. This study specifically investigated SLPs’ knowledge of SM and the different types of treatment; it further examined the SLP’s role when working in a team approach to provide services. A survey was created and sent out to SLPs who work with preschool to elementary-aged children to collect data. The results revealed that a majority of SLPs had worked/work with a child with SM, however there was a reported lack of knowledge of the treatments for SM. Nevertheless, the SLPs who worked collaboratively with other professionals to provide treatment indicated they had positive experiences when providing services to children with SM.
