Who are we?
Sexuality & Gender Inclusion (SGI) within the Center for Diversity & Inclusion (CDI) at The College of Wooster provides support and community for LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans, & Queer) students. SGI also works with all members of the campus and wider community to ensure an inclusive and affirming environment for people of any gender, romantic orientation, or sexuality.
SGI works closely with all branches within the CDI – Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA), International Student Services (ISS), and Religious & Spiritual Life (RSL), to provide educational, social, cultural, and academic opportunities. SGI works to address the ways in which attraction and gender intersect with race, ethnicity, class, nationality, ability, religion, and other aspects of our identity.
Get Involved
There are many ways to get involved at the College of Wooster, such as our many student organizations or other programs that partner with the Center for Diversity and Inclusion. You can help create a climate free of transphobia, cissexism, homophobia, heterosexism, misogyny, sexism, and be a part of an affirming and inclusive community. Follow SGI on Instagram at @SGI_Wooster to stay current on all of our events.
Housing
The goal of All-Gender Housing is to provide a space for every individual to feel comfortable and safe on our campus. This space provides a supportive community for people of all genders, is queer-focused but not queer-exclusive, and is open to students of all years.
Restrooms
The College of Wooster is committed to ensuring that all students, staff, faculty, and visitors have access to safe, usable restrooms on campus. Please see our map of All-Gender Restrooms on the Wooster campus.
Additional Resources and Information
Safe Space Training
Safe Space is designed to give individuals the knowledge and tools they need to be a more effective ally. Our Safe Space program teaches the basics about LGBTQ+ identities and culture through definitions, terminology, and an overview of current social and political issues. These trainings are interactive and we provide plenty of time for questions and answers. The one-hour trainings are for faculty, staff, students, and community members.
The Q Space
The Q Space is an LGBTQ+ inclusive and affirming space that opened on the ground floor of Compton Hall in 2018. The Q Space is intended to be a comfortable spot for students to gather and create community. The Q Space includes a wall-mounted television, easily moveable furniture, tables and chairs, a giant whiteboard, and hot tea. Many resources are available in the space, including the Clothing Exchange (Clothing Closet), pronoun buttons and stickers, coloring supplies, and more.
LGBTQ+ History Month
LGBTQ+ History Month is celebrated with annual month-long observances of lesbian, gay, bi and trans history, along with the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. National Coming Out Day (October 11) and the March on Washington in 1979 are commemorated in the LGBTQ+ community during this time.
Community Care and Craft Nights
Community Care and Craft Nights are a time to join in community and create something unique. These events take place on the second Wednesday of each month from 5:00 – 7:00 pm in the Q Space.
Pride Month
Each spring, CDI units and student organizations partner to celebrate Pride Month, highlighting our LGBTQ+ Pride Festival and other various events.
Lavender Graduation
Lavender Graduation is an affirming ceremony that honors our graduating lesbian, gay, bi, trans, and queer students.
